How to Listen Without Getting Defensive

I will be the first to say ” I Do This!! ” No, I don’t want to, so I’ve been working on it.

Today I learn something so interesting, our neurotransmitters filter all the information we absorb. Now, when we hear a ” difference of opinion” about a subject of our deep concern, because it’s of importance to us, we get defensive! It’s the same process that occurs if we see a loved one getting attacked.

This particular article talks about how we can work ourselves out of that defense mode. These are EASY AND SIMPLE changes that can strengthen our relationships of any level!

You’ve Got This!! Good Luck!

Here’s the key to listening non-defensively.

🌼 I dedicate this post to every warrior who’s survived abuse: whether you’re a man, woman, gender fluent, survived emotional abuse, sexual, or physical. An individual who lives to tell their story of every, any, and all situations where he/she endured forced harm is beyond surviving. You are amazing, and you need to believe this about you. 🌸

The couple chattered merrily down a chilly London street. They’re newly weds, and the honeymoon phases was radiating from their smiles.

Two blocks from their favorite Cafè, they passed a small boy shivering under an old ragged tarp.

” Oh look John, that young man needs help. He’s at least needing an impervious shelter to keep dry.!” Natalia empathized.

” Hello! What’s your name?” She inquired before John could caution her.

” Toby, ma’am.” the frightened boy murmured.

” Well Toby, I’m Natalia. Would you like to come with us so we can get you some basic needs?”

He, thankfully, took her hand.

100 Word Wednesday

Every year, on Memorial Day, Jimmy and his Uncle Frank went fishing. Frank was an Army Vet of 36 years, and fishing was always his chance for relaxation.

The men were carrying on, enjoying laughs, down old route 116, when they heard a sudden spine tingling scream. It was a woman’s voice, and she needed help!

Immediately, in the quick pull off, the two men hurdled out of the old station wagon. They practically fell on their faces trying to get to the area where she frightfully hung.

” Hello Ms, hold on!!” Jimmy shouted.” We’ll get you up here, safely.”

Those Who Needed This

For those of you who need to hear this:

I got you. I get it. Me, too! You got this. You’re going to get through it. It won’t be easy; but, you are equipped with everything you need. Sometimes, you’ll feel weak. Sometimes, you’ll fall ill.. But, you will get back up and keep going. Because you’re Strong Enough!

Just Don’t

I don’t owe you an explanation.

My clothes are on my body; it’s not a welcome invitation to violate.

My skin color IS my beauty; my history my story. It’s not your ticket to decimate and hate.

My voice is my truth; my right to use it. You will not munipulate and silence.

My actions are my life, my legacy to pass on. It’s not up for you to revise and edit.

My heart lives within me, the element that gives me life. It’s not yours to destroy with your bitterness.

My sexually is my pride. It’s nothing offensive but to your ego.

My spirituality is my peace. It’s not an excuse for your nasty ignorance of unacceptable behavior.

Any, every, and all parts of who I am is mine to own, protect, nurture, love, cherish, and use to further kindness and compassion.

I don’t owe you an explanation!

MoonChild & Her Wolves

MoonChild has family roots that tie her to The Sioux Native Americans. She doesn’t live a lifestyle similar to her heritage; however, she respects and practices the basic fundamental truths.

One cold Friday night, Moonchild heard a noise outside her living room window. She’s never had issues with intruders; but, there’s a first time for everything. She grabbed her rifle, tucked in a locked box, behind her bedroom door, and stepped out onto her porch.

“Hello? Who’s out there?”, She shouted, with her rifle ready to fire. Being a single mom of two daughters, she was always ready to fight and protect.

She heard no response. She repeated the question, ” Hello?! I know you’re close. Come out into the light and no one gets hurt!”

Suddenly, she heard little whimpers.

“Huh??” She uttered.

Slowly, she made her way down the steps, and noticed several pawprint tracks in the snow. Her heart sunk; “Oh my!” She thought to herself. Whatever animal was close, couldn’t be very big. The prints explained that much.

She slowly stepped off the last step, and moved toward the direction of the prints. The moon was full, a beautiful blue and lit up the snow.

Just around the backside of her tool shed, huddled in a hole dug in the far right corner, where a beautiful pack of cold baby wolves.

She stared for a moment, then fell to her knees. Slowly, to not spook the babies, she sat on her heals and waited. MoonChild knew wolves were loyal to thier pack. If they were here, it’s highly likely adults of the pack were close.

The waiting turned into twenty minutes, and the North Dakota snow drift, especially this time of night at this time of year, is deadly. As if these precious babes understand her concern, they slowly made their way toward her. Sniffing first, to endure safety, one by one, they circled her.

She continued to be still, intuitively realizing she felt their trust. After another ten minutes, they were bouncing on and licking her.

Quickly, she gathered her precious pups, and hurried inside. They surely needed food and water.

Four Days Since

We structure our lives around “time”. Since Jesus’ day, humans have been doing this. He says, in Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

To every thing there is a season,

and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, a time to die;

a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal;

a time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh;

a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;

a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get, and a time to lose;

a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and a time to sew;

a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate;

A time of war, and a time of peace.

Time… the center of all that operates, finishes, begins, and exists….

In life, there are moments, we all have expierenced: birthdays, school, losing teeth, learning to walk.

Other moments appear in most of our timelines: graduation, driving, marriage, children.

Time is the constant change, ironically the very thing we pray will

Stop when life feels wonderful…

Be forgettable when moments are uncomfortable…

Hurry when we’re eager…

Slow down when we desire….

As if we’ve ever had control of its infinite existence and fulfilling purpose.

We didn’t create life, in the terms of ” in the beginning”. We never decided how life reproduces, species adapt, animals appear. We weren’t given such control.

Considering our mortal imperfections, I am relieved such is true. Never do I wish to hold the responsibility of which all things weave together in life’s dance.

Having said that, then, I must be patient and allow it to do what’s meant for me. I must trust it, in the intentions it has, for my wellbeing. I must live it, now… Because, it doesn’t stop, and it won’t slow down. I must use it in such a way that means something, because those individuals are who we remember… Because love is the ONLY that conquered death.

I have been lost, in past memories, quite a bit the last several days. Some days logic kicked my ass with the facts. Time after time after time…. (Fill in the blank). Unfortunately, this phrase comes with a list. Sucks! They’re truths, though. I had to accept them. I had to change it.

Other days, I’m lost in reasons why I miss him. Moments of intimacy and delicious closeness. His presence was lacking. That was the number one issue.

Time is stirring all of this, showing me signs, revising my vision of myself, refueling my heart and soul… And revealing clarity in the form of wisdom. None of this can happen if I don’t be patient…

Pain is uncomfortable, but so is being mistreated and neglected. Four days later, I do feel a bit more strength. I feel growth and faith.

I’m trusting my process

Time is on my side.
